Introducing the new, improved Work Star 3rd edition

Work Star 3rd edition changes

This page introduces the new and improved edition of the Work Star, which was fully published on the 12th September 2018. It explains what has changed in the new edition of the Work Star, and the considerations for any services using the old edition of the Work Star.

Triangle recommend that any services using the old edition should upgrade to the new edition if possible.

What’s changed?

Based on feedback from practitioners and service users, the new 3rd edition of the Work Star has been made clearer to read and use, with better definition between stages on the Journey of Change and better scale descriptions that are more relevant to supporting people into employment to.

The key changes are:

  • Replacing the “Challenges” scale with a new scale called “Health & Well-being” for a clearer focus around physical and mental health, to make it easier to agree readings in this scale with a service user and to remove any confusion with the “Stability” scale
  • Renaming “Job-specific skills” to “Job skills and experience” where the meaning stays the same, but the expression includes a greater focus on work experience
  • Changes to the Journey of Change stage names, where the meaning is the same, but the expression is different, for consistency with other Outcomes Stars and to be more strengths-based.

Upgrading to the new edition - five things you need to do

Triangle recommend that organisations using the old edition should upgrade to new edition.

Additional training is not a requirement of using the new edition, and if you already have Star licences there will be no extra costs to using the new edition.

Before choosing to upgrade, do the following five things:

  1. Set a date when your service will upgrade to the new edition and stop using the old edition - make sure all staff in your service upgrade on that date to avoid your service using different editions at the same time
  2. Make sure all staff in a service are familiar with the changes in the new edition – we have developed a short factsheet (which can be shared as a PDF on email, printed on A4 or enlarged to A3 as a poster) explaining the key differences
  3. Prepare the new resources for the new edition (User Guide, Star Chart etc) and ensure staff know how to access them
  4. Support staff to make the change – perhaps by discussing the changes in team meetings or supervision. Additional training for practitioners is not required
  5. Think about how you approach your Star data from the old and new edition. Because one of the scales has completely changed, care should be taken when thinking about how to use 2nd edition data and 3rd edition data. The longer factsheet breaks this down and explains the different options available to you.
