Accessibility and the Star Online

Recommend Browsers

The Star Online is compatible with Internet Explorer (versions 6 and above), Firefox (versions 3 and above) and Google Chrome, however, we recommend a recent version of one of these browsers for best results.

The full website is best used on a screen size of 1024 X 800 pixels or above. Screens under 660 pixels wide, for instance iPhones and other small mobile devices, will be detected and delivered the 'flexi' or 'mobile' version of the site which is focused on completing Stars with service users and has reduced functionality.

Internet Explorer 6.0 is likely to be phased out by Microsoft at some point in the near future and we urge organisations who are using it to make the step to 8.0 or above.

Our policy

This application is designed to be inclusive and to provide access to all users regardless of technological or physical disability.

Whilst we strive to achieve and maintain levels of accessibility that conform to the AA standard, we recognise that it is very hard to maintain such compliance on a complex, dynamic web application such as the Star Online, and as the Star is a visual tool, some of the screens within the system depend on the user being able to see certain images in order for it to function fully.

Javascript must be enabled and is critical to carrying out some functions.

The Complete Star feature

With support from Blind Veterans and the Pocklington Trust, adaptations have been made to the 'complete Star' feature to make it highly usable for blind and visually impaired users. The feature has been tested by blind and visually impaired users using iPads, the zoom tool SuperNova and the screenreader Jaws.

The Star is a visual tool, however, blind users and workers supporting blind users can switch to 'text only' when using the 'complete Star' process. There is a prominent button on every page of the 'complete Star' feature which converts the graphical Star ladder into CSS and HTML, making it readable by screenreader software.

iPad users can use the in-built accessibility features.

Visually impaired people will find that using a zoom tool will reveal that a great amount of thought has been put into presenting the VIP Star Online in a way that works well at high levels of magnification.

Background and line colours have been adjusted to increase contrast, layouts and feedback presentation has been designed to function usably at 20X magnification.

Text size

You may also use your browser settings to change the text size for the websites that you visit.

How you do this depends on the browser you use:

  • Internet Explorer 7/8: Select the 'Page' menu, then one of the options under 'Zoom' or 'Text Size'. The default setting is 'Medium'
  • Internet Explorer 6: Select the 'View' menu, and select one of the options under 'Text Size'
  • Firefox: Select the 'View' menu, then 'Text Size', then select Increase, Decrease or Normal
  • Opera: Select the 'View' menu, then one of the 'Zoom' percentage options

Other browsers may also have similar options available.

Please consult the help section with your browser if options above aren't available.
